Hartbeespoort Dam

Hartbeespoort Dam, which opened in 1923, is situated in the Mageliesberg Mountains and not far from Pretoria and Johannesburg. The shoreline to the water hosts some lovely private homes and a number of smart marinas. Many homes in the area offer holiday accommodation in Hartbeespoort Dam. This destination is popular with water sports enthusiasts and those looking for weekend retreats. As well as water sports such as water-skiing, jet-skiing and windsurfing there is hang-gliding and paragliding for the adventurous amongst you. You will also find here a snake park, an aquarium and a zoo. The waters of the dam and some of the surroundings form a nature reserve. The Oberon area is the best place to spot the many different birds to be seen here and the Kommandodek area is the place to spot game.

The dam itself, known as "Harties", is situated in a valley that lies south of the Mageliesberg Mountains roughly 35km from Pretoria. Hartbeespoort means "pass of the hartbees" (which are a breed of antelope) in Afrikaans. The waters of the dam cover a surface area of 2,062 hectares and holds 195m cubic metres of water.

Due to the popularity of the area a few small towns have now sprung up catering for the ever demanding needs for accommodation. In addition to Hartbeespoort there are towns such as Kosmos, Melodie, Ifafi and Meerhof where visitors will find guest house, self catering and hotel accommodation.

For golf fanatics there are 5 golf courses to choose from in the Hartbeespoort area and 4 of these are within 10 minutes drive of each other. The golf course at Pecanwood Golf Estate was designed by Jack Nicklaus.

The Hartbeespoort Dam Cableway is a great way to fully appreciate the beauty of the dam and the Magaliesberg Mountains. The Cableway runs right up to the top of the Magaliesberg giving you superb views over the dam. You might even spot a Fish Eagle or Black Eagle on your way up. The Hartbeespoort Dam Cableway is open weekdays from 10h00 to 15h30 and on weekends between 10h00 and 17h00.
